A chill is in the air! Which means it’s time to close your pool for the winter. But how to get started? With concerns like algae growth or parts freezing, it can seem like a daunting task. Here we’ve outlined some simple steps for you to follow to get your pool in tip-top shape, and ready to be opened up again in the summer!
Here is everything you need to know about closing your pool for the winter!
Clean Your Pool
The first step to getting your pool ready for winter is to clean it out! Make sure you remove all the debris like leaves, and clean the sides of your pool with a vacuum or a brush to ensure all of the dirt is gone. Bacteria can build up in the off season, and making sure your pool is 100% clean when you close it can prevent the filtration system from getting clogged. Don’t forget to empty your skimmer basket too! Your future self will thank you.
Test and Balance, Winterize and Shock
Check the pH, calcium hardness, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels of your pool one last time this season. Use a pool testing kit to make sure you’re leaving your pool in the best condition possible. Remember, however you leave your pool now will be what you open it up to next season!
Next, if you decide to use a winterizing agent, be sure to do so about a week before you plan to close it. A winterizing additive can help keep your pool clean during the off season. Be sure to do this with plenty of time before you plan to shock your pool. Combining the two processes is highly advised against.
Finally, shock your pool one last time. Be sure to use gloves, goggles, and other safety equipment when handling harsh chemicals.
Clean Your Filter
DE Filter Tank: Drain, and leave your backwash valve open.
Sand Filter: Remove the drain plug, and leave it off for the winter.
Cartridge Filter: Remove the cartridge and clean it.
Remove and Store Pool Accessories
Remove your ladders, skimmer baskets, wall fittings, diving boards, and floats from your pool and store them somewhere safe.
Disconnect and Drain Your Heater
If you have a heater, be sure to drain it until there is no water sitting inside. Remove any drain plugs, but not the heater drain.
Clear the Pool Lines
If you live in a place where snow and freezing are a concern, this step is for you! Any water remaining inside your pool equipment can freeze, causing them to expand and crack. You may need to use an air compressor to ensure they are completely dry, or use an antifreeze.
Install Your Pool Cover
Wave goodbye for now, and cover that pool! Use either a mesh or vinyl pool cover to keep debris out of your pool in the off season. Vinyl is better at keeping debris out of the water, but mesh is the less expensive option. Whichever one you go with, the important thing is to make sure that your pool cover fits well.
Check-Ins
Once a month, check on your pool’s chemical balance just to be sure everything is going smoothly, adjusting the chemicals as needed.
